STATEMENT
Most recently, I have completed a body of work of oil paintings depicting Florida seascapes. In this series of paintings, I have completed landscape and seascape paintings from life and studies showing the beauty of natural settings by the sea. I have enjoyed the integration of natural hues in my painting color pallete as well as focusing on elements of sky, sea and shoreline. This series of representational seascape paintings reflect upon the restorative value of nature – the song of the sea, the hum of the wind, and maybe the call of a friendly seagull that flies above during a walk on the beach. Based upon the belief that time spent in nature can be a vehicle for healing, creating a series of paintings that depict the seashore in context of nature. In the future, I would like to include the seashore and seascapes as settings for my future portraits and figurative paintings.
Previously, in my work I have addressed the question of youth in context of the reality of the ephemeral; particularly while juxtaposing the portrait of a person within a natural environment. This previous series featured painted portraits of people in nature as the backdrop for their setting. I would like to suggest that there is an intrinsic connection between the interaction of human beings with the natural world which is being compromised by our reliance upon feedback through the virtual world instead of contact with nature.
I am inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite tradition of English painters such as John Ruskin, John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and John William Waterhouse. This group of portraits reflect the fleeting and fickle nature of time and the aging process of human beings which is inescapable. By carefully capturing both the likeness of the person and the quality of the natural setting, I hope to unite humanity with nature in a symbolic gesture.
